It rained corpses one day in England, sometime in the 17th century.

Their heft pounded uncobbled streets in towns across East Anglia, splashing up mud and dank water. The land became pockmarked with 6 foot craters and entire villages were ruined.

Some fell through thatched roofs and landed on wives preparing meals for their families. Many fell in neighbouring forests, cracking through branches and obliterating mushrooms that had been flourishing in the damp conditions of autumn. Still more destroyed market stalls, sending produce flying across town squares, and killed livestock grazing in fields.

A few were lanced by church spires, becoming grotesque gargoyles - a flesh offering to Christ - or fell straight into wells and became submerged in deep water; the only ones to receive something of a burial. One corpse in Aldeburgh fell directly into a grave that had been dug for a local farmer but it was promptly removed and slung onto a heap with the rest of them.

The clean-up operation took weeks. Huge pyres were built to dispose of the bodies, filling the air with the reek of death from morning until night. The Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk sought funding from the Crown to pay for repairs to churches, fortifications and homes.

The annals recorded that approximately 27,000 bodies were recovered and burned after that corporeal downpour. All of them were dressed like Morris dancers and had hazel sticks clutched tightly in both of their hands.
