about

Doom Cycle is JHassall’s first full-length album since his (now seemingly prophetic) ARE YOU READY FOR THE END TIMES? created back in 2016.

His debut dealt with themes of eschatology and apocalypse in a far-reaching LP that covered a lot of sonic ground; with Doom Cycle JHassall has delivered a more focused and minimal album that feels like a collection of ephemeral thoughts and experiments, coalescing into an understated whole.

Recorded in the midst of the UK’s lockdown in the spring of 2020, Doom Cycle is a strange broadcast from a concrete bunker. Its grey, fuzzed-out and insular aesthetic combines elements of dub, noise, no wave and techno to produce an idiosyncratic palette. Moments of harshness and excess collide with sparser textures and, at times, surprisingly harmonic layers.

Tonally, Doom Cycle is less aggressively sinister and foreboding than previous JHassall releases, even flirting with moments of optimism and light, in amongst the grittier passages.

Nevertheless, there’s always an air of strangeness and melancholy throughout, befitting of the isolation and surreality lockdown imposed on all of us; whether it’s disarming, unsettling or simply unexpected. The whole thing sort of slips through your fingers, like crumbling brick, while somehow managing to reward repeat listens and be - weirdly - catchy.
